 In the begining...
In 1996, Jane Dean, former nurse and midwife, was practising as a naturopath in Lancaster. She was increasingly concerned about the growing number of parents with sick and brain injured children coming to her for help and advice. Parents were looking for answers why their children weren't responding to orthodox medicine. These were families in crisis. Jane decided to open a free children's clinic on the first Saturday of every month to help and support these children and their families.
The arrival of a very sick little boy Andrew Waddington was the catalyst for Jane to form 'A Breath for Life' children's charity. Following a routine 10-minute operation which tragically went wrong, Andrew was deprived of oxygen for 8 minutes causing severe brain damage that doctors said was irreversible. The prognosis for Andrew was bleak, he would never be able to communicate or see anything other than bright lights. Jane was determined to do everything possible to help Andrew. Through naturopathic treatments of detox and good nutrition, Andrew made excellent progress but Jane wanted more for him. Investigations lead Jane to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy that had proved very successful in the treatment of brain injury in other parts of the world.

In order to acquire a Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber, Jane needed a fundraising campaign. In order to fundraise a charity needed to be established. So, A Breath for Life was born.

In January 1998, A Breath for Life moved into their first home in Lancaster with a leased chamber. By October, the charity acquired their very own purpose built chamber thanks to the very generous donation of £40,000 by 2 sisters, Molly and Betty Derham.

To date A Breath for Life has treated over 2000 children suffering from a range of illnesses and problems including autism, asthma, eczema, food allergies, chest and ear infections, cerebral palsy, rare genetic diseases, learning difficulties such as, dyslexia, dyspraxia, attention deficit hyperactive disorder and children for whom there is no diagnosis.

A Breath for Life offers individual programs to stimulate healing and immune activity in each child. We believe symptoms are the body trying to heal itself and we seek to treat the cause of the illness.

All too often the tragedy facing parents with a sick child is the removal of hope. A breath for life never turns away a child and believes there is something that can be done for every sick child. Every child deserves a future.
