| Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy |
 |
Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy for sick and brain injured children, pioneered by Dr Phillip James PhD, FFOM from Dundee University, has the potential to produce remarkable results by promoting the formation of new capillary blood vessels and allowing oxygenation of damaged tissues.
|
| How does it work? |
The 'Derham' chamber, named after two sisters who became benefactors to the charity, accommodates up to 4 children and 4 carers. The seats are removable so that wheel chairs, beanbags or other more comfortable seating can be used.
We have treated children as young as one and as old as eighteen.
The children wear specially designed hoods, which allow them to play, read or watch TV, whilst receiving 100% pure oxygen through these hoods.
The chamber is pressurised to 1.75 bar, which is the equivalent of diving 24ft under water. |
| How does it help? |
| In simple terms, oxygen is normally carried around the body in the blood, but following a trauma or injury; blood flow to that area is dramatically reduced. During hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the oxygen cells in the blood are compressed allowing them to be carried in the blood plasma through the smaller capillaries into those damaged areas. This can revive any 'idling' living neurons, which are present in the damaged area. |
| What does it feel like? |
Experiences vary, and can be upsetting for some children at first, but generally once they start receiving the oxygen, they relax. A parent or carer is always present.
During the compression and decompression process most will feel a slight pop or crackle in the ears, similar to those experienced when flying. The chamber operator is trained to examine the ears, if parents are concerned.
The treatments last for about 90 minutes; part of that time is the compression and decompression process. Hoods and masks are put on and later removed at the equivalent depth of 10ft, and oxygen is supplied to the patient for a minimum of 1 hour at the full depth of 24ft. |
| What symptoms benefit from Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy? |
Oxygen is a primary healer and many symptoms can be treated using hyperbaric oxygen.
In the main we have so far used it for children with Cerebral palsy, Autism, Asthma, and Eczema. We have treated adults who have had Strokes, Heart Attacks and chest infections. There are many centres nationally for the primary treatment of Multiple Sclerosis and other centres have reported good results with burns, healing open wounds, broken bones, post operative recovery and Sports injuries. |
