| Most people are familiar with the 'knee jerk' test, when your knee is tapped to test your reflexes. If they are working properly, the leg will involuntary jerk upwards. A system of diagnosis and treatment based on this and an American chiropractic doctor, George Goodheart, developed similar reactions in 1964. It became known as Kinesiology from the Greek work kinesis, meaning motion. |
| How does it work? |
If we take the premise that each group of muscles is related to other parts of the body - the organs, digestive system, glands, bones and circulation - and that when the muscles are in good working order so is the body. How a muscle responds in tests to gentle manual pressure reveals how the body is functioning.
Kinesiologists do not diagnose illness. They look for imbalances or deficiencies in nutrition and energy or locate physical problems. Having pinpointed any trouble points, practitioners revitalise them with light fingertip massage to pressure points on the body and scalp. Most of these points are some distance from the muscles they relate to. How it works is because the muscles rely on good supplies of blood and lymph (a body fluid, which carries away, poisons and drains tissues) stimulating appropriate pressure points enhances the blood flow to the muscles and balances the lymphatic system.
Our bodies also contain invisible energy, like an electric current running through 'computer circuits' that control bodily functions - a stomach circuit, a pancreas circuit etc. These circuits 'blow a fuse' under stress or illness. Muscle testing checks these circuits to give a clear picture of the patient's state of health. The therapist will 'reset' the circuits, which are out of balance.
Kinesiology is also used as a preventative measure, to identify imbalances, which if neglected could lead to problems, in the future. |
| Who does it help? |
It benefits everyone but in particularly people who have an allergy or sensitivity to certain foods. The body recognises and reacts instantly to nutrients and chemicals, and these reactions affect amongst other things the way the muscles work. If certain foods cause instant muscle weakness, then the patient is allergic to them. The allergy can result in many symptoms such as catarrh, depression, headaches, stress, tiredness, asthma and a weakened immune system.
Conditions such as lack of energy and tiredness are made worse by the stagnation of body fluids. The treatment for this is by balancing the lymphatic system and improving the blood flow. Back pain is treated using muscle-balancing techniques without stretching ligaments or loosening joints.
Kinesiology can help with emotional problems and fears with gentle tapping movements. |
